How does it work?
Thanks for your interest in a pet portrait! Here’s what you can expect:
Step 1
To kick off the process, please reach out to marrownsoot@gmail.com. Be sure to include a few reference pictures of the pet(s); the closer and clearer, the better! I also appreciate the following information:
- desired portrait size
- orientation [portrait or landscape]
- desired style [realistic or stylized, colour or monochrome]
- framing [bust or full body]
- any special requests you have for the portrait [e.g. background, accessories]
If you’re not sure about any of these, no worries! I’m happy to help you through artistic decisions.
Step 2
Once I’ve reviewed your email, I’ll reach out with any clarifying questions and a quote. If you wish to proceed with the portrait, I ask for a 20% deposit upfront by e-transfer. Once that is received, I get to work!
I’ll be in touch throughout the process, sending pictures of progress, to make sure everything looks as expected.
Step 3
Once the portrait is done, it’ll be placed in rigid and waterproof packaging and shipped to you, or delivered in-person to an address within the city of Guelph. The rest of the payment (80%) is due after the piece is completed.

About the Artist

Hello! I’m Gen, the artist behind Marrow & Soot. Born into an artistic family, my art journey started as a child with crayon drawings of zoo animals, cats, and rabbits. I am primarily self-taught, with a brief stint at the Rosetta School of Visual Arts. I took my first commission 14 years ago and have been drawing portraits since. My art has primarily focused on animal and human portraiture, expanding into imaginative realism in the last 7 years.
I have always had a deep love for animals and nature. My lovely chihuahua Chica, who sadly passed away in 2020, has been the subject of many a portrait. Seeing a portrait of her sweet face framed in my home makes me so happy. My hope is to share that feeling with you!
The name “Marrow & Soot” is a cheeky allusion to my preference for drawing with graphite on white paper: the art is soot-grey on bone-white.

Collections
Aside from pet portraits, I like to make art with nature, symbiosis, and transformation as central themes. Below are some of my in-progress and past collections.
